WHAT IS A STENT ?
A stent is a small, metallic meshed tube that is implanted in a coronary artery in order to treat an obstruction or a narrowing of the artery. There are two kinds of stents, those with and those without a drug coating. They allow the widening of the artery’s diameter and are implanted by a minor procedure which lasts about 30 minutes.
A conventional stent is opened inside the artery using a balloon, as conventional stents do not have elastic properties. Thus the shape of the stent is defined by the balloon and does not change once it is affixed in the artery.
STENTYS offers a revolutionary new stent that adapts to changes in the artery’s diameter and prevents malapposition, which can be observed with conventional stents particularly in patients who have suffered a heart attack (acute myocardial infarction). The STENTYS stent is self-expanding: its shape and diameter can adapt to the anatomical changes of coronary arteries during the post-infarction phase, so as to stay permanently in contact with the vessel wall. It also avoids, thanks to a mesh made of micro-connectors, blocking the access to lateral branches.
The STENTYS stent is implanted in the lesion where residual clot and spasm make the artery lumen smaller.
After resolution of the acute event, the STENTYS stent has fully expanded on its own to adapt to the new anatomy - with perfect apposition.
The STENTYS stent is made out of Nitinol, a titanium alloy with super-elastic properties, and is approved for stents with and without a drug coating.
